It’s All Perspective
People sometimes don’t realize that I have bad days too, days that involve self-pity and being quite human. Really, we all do have these bad days. Sometimes our moments of self-pity can be remedied by interaction with another person who inspires and reminds us of the importance of appreciating the life that we have.
Joe was in the office shuffling papers and I was looking in the mirror staring at the smile lines that no longer leave my face when I have stopped smiling. Some of you can relate to what I’m saying. Anyway, the TV was on and I heard a female voice talking. I was distracted by the young voice long enough to stop wallowing in self-pity and to walk into the bedroom to see who it was. On the screen was a seventeen-year-old girl who had an unmistakable look in her eyes that announced that she had seen and thought things that many grown-ups hadn’t. She’d experienced life in “fast-forward.” I sat on the edge of the bed and turned up the volume. She was sharing a story of young courage and even of joy. This may sound strange after I fill you in on the details of the girl’s life. She had terminal cancer and knew what that entailed, inevitable death. Yet she looked happy and proud of her journey in life so far. Some would ask, “How can that be?”
Her story already was inspiring, and it became more inspiring when she mentioned that the Make-A-Wish Foundation had granted her last wish. She had a high school sweetheart she wanted to marry before she died. So the Make-A-Wish Foundation, one of my favorite and in my opinion most valuable foundations in the world, had created a fairy tale wedding just for her. I found myself mesmerized by the girl who stood before us in her cascading white gown as she beamed with certain happiness. I say that because she knew that her wedding day was to be savored right now and not muddied by what lay ahead of her. She wasn’t saying, “Why me?” like most of us naturally would, but rather she spoke of nothing but her gratitude for all who supported her in her life.
At that moment it resonated in my soul that she would never have the luxury of growing old enough to complain about something as trivial as wrinkles, as I just had. That thought alone could have put life back into perspective for me. My mind chose to take it further, thinking that this girl would never be able to complain about her kids riding her motherly nerves or her husband spending too much time at the office. There would be no complaints about not getting the job she wanted or having to take an extra class to graduate from college due to changed guidelines. I tell people that when you’re feeling down, you can always look around and learn how to bring yourself up again.
I thought this story was
